Standard of Proof

The level to which a case must be proven in order to find someone guilty (criminal) or liable (civil). The standard of proof in criminal matters is beyond a reasonable doubt, the highest level of proof. The standard of proof in civil matters is a balance of probabilities, meaning proof that the defendant likely caused harm.
